The end of the year is an exciting time filled with celebrations, sunshine, and anticipation of the holidays, but it can also bring big changes for young children. New routines, unfamiliar faces, possibly finishing up at their current room, or even preparing to move to a new centre or primary school classroom can feel overwhelming for tamariki.

At WildHeart, we believe that with gentle guidance and connection, children can navigate these transitions with confidence.

Understanding the Emotions Beneath the Change

Transitions often bring mixed emotions. Tamariki may feel excited about what lies ahead, but also uncertain about leaving familiar kaiako, friends, or routines. You may notice clinginess, changes in sleep, big feelings, or bursts of energy. These are all normal signs that your child is processing change. The best thing you can offer is patience, reassurance, and plenty of hugs.

Talk About What’s Coming Up

Young children feel more secure when they know what to expect. Talk in simple, positive language about the changes ahead:

“Soon you’ll be starting primary school with new activities to explore and great new friends to get to know.”

“You’ll see some of your friends who started earlier this year and we can go back to preschool and visit and show them your uniform and tell them all about your first week.

If your child is changing rooms or spaces, whakaahua (photos), short visits, or looking at the new environment together can be incredibly grounding.

Keep Routines Consistent Where You Can

While the end of the year often brings busy schedules, try to maintain familiar daily rhythms, especially sleep, mealtimes, and calm moments. Predictability helps children feel safe and reduces emotional overwhelm, making it easier for them to manage new situations.

Celebrate Their Growth

Acknowledge the progress your child has made this year, including the friendships they’ve developed, the skills they’ve learned, and the confidence they’ve gained! Sharing these reflections helps children feel proud of themselves and excited for what comes next. A simple ritual like choosing favourite memories together can help create a sense of closure.

Support Their Need for Connection

Transitions feel gentler when children experience strong, secure relationships. Offer more snuggles, extra stories at bedtime, or simple one-on-one moments throughout the day. These small acts of connection refill your child’s emotional cup and help them face change with courage.

Look After Yourself, Too

Children are sensitive to the emotional tone around them, so when parents take time to rest, breathe, and manage their own stress, tamariki naturally feel more grounded. A calm adult presence is one of the most powerful supports a child can have during times of change.

End-of-year transitions are a natural part of a child’s learning journey, offering opportunities for growth, resilience, and new beginnings. At WildHeart, we are here to walk alongside you and your tamariki; supporting them as they discover, explore, and step confidently into the next chapter.
