Starting preschool is a significant milestone in your child’s life – and at WildHeart, we want to ensure that this transition is as smooth and positive as possible. Here are some practical tips to help prepare your tamariki for their first day at preschool!
- Talk About Preschool
Begin by talking to your tamariki about what preschool is and what they can expect. Use positive and exciting language to describe the activities they will do at WildHeart, the friends they will make, and the fun they will have. Reading books about starting preschool can also help familiarise them with the concept.
- Visit WildHeart Together
Visit WildHeart with your child before their first day. This is a BIG transition for your tamariki, so we encourage whānau to bring children for visits in the lead-up to their official first day, so they can experience the environment with parents and caregivers. We find four visits to be a good number for most tamariki to feel comfortable, but additional visits are most welcome for children who need a little more time through this transition process. During your centre visits to WildHeart as a family, show your child their learning space, the playground, and other areas they will use. Meeting their Kaiako and seeing the environment can make the new surroundings feel less intimidating and more familiar.
- Establish a Routine
Children thrive on routine, and establishing a consistent daily schedule can help ease the transition to preschool. Start implementing a routine that includes waking up, getting dressed, and having breakfast at the same time every day. This helps tamariki know what to expect and feel more secure.
- Practice Independence
Encourage your child to practice basic self-help skills such as putting on their shoes, washing their hands, and using the toilet independently. These skills will boost their confidence and make them feel more comfortable in an early learning centre setting.
- Pack Comfort Items
Allow your tamariki to bring a comfort item from home, such as a favourite stuffed animal or a family photo. Having something familiar can provide emotional support and help them feel more at ease in their new environment.
- Stay Positive and Calm
Your attitude towards preschool will significantly influence your child’s feelings. Stay positive, calm, and confident about the transition. Reassure them that it’s okay to feel nervous and that you will be there to support them every step of the way.
- Create a Goodbye Ritual
Establish a special goodbye ritual to make the drop-off smoother. This could be a special hug, a high-five, or a reassuring phrase. Keep the goodbye short and sweet to prevent prolonged separation anxiety.
- Be Patient and Understanding
Remember that it’s normal for tamariki to take some time to adjust to preschool. Be patient and understanding with their feelings. Offer plenty of love and support as they navigate this new experience.
