Your baby’s first year is full of magic. From sleepy cuddles to wobbly first steps, this is a time of incredible growth — not just physically, but emotionally and cognitively, too! At WildHeart ECE, we know every pēpi develops at their own pace, and understanding the typical milestones can help you support your little one through each exciting stage.

Physical Development: From Reflexes to Rolling Over

In the early months, your baby’s movements are mostly reflexive. But as their muscles strengthen and coordination improves, you’ll start to see big changes. By around 4–6 months, many babies begin to roll, grasp toys, and push up during times they have rolled onto their tummy. Sitting, crawling, and pulling to stand often follow between 6–12 months, though the timeline can vary widely.

Tip: Give your baby plenty of supervised floor time to explore and stretch. A clear, safe space is the perfect “gym” for growing bodies!

Cognitive Development: Curiosity Comes Alive

Your baby’s brain is growing at an astonishing rate. In the first few months, they begin to recognise faces, track movement, and respond to voices. By 6–9 months, many babies start to explore cause and effect — shaking toys, banging objects, or dropping things just to see what happens… over and over again!

By the end of the first year, your little one may be mimicking simple sounds, pointing to things, or understanding familiar words like “no” or “bye-bye.”

Tip: Talk, sing, and play every day. Language exposure and sensory experiences help build vital brain connections.

Emotional Development: Bonding and Connection

Babies are born ready to connect. In the first year, they begin to form deep attachments — especially with their primary caregivers. Around 6–9 months, many babies develop stranger anxiety or separation distress, which is a completely normal sign of secure bonding.

Facial expressions, coos and cries are their way of communicating big feelings long before they can speak.

Tip: Responding warmly and consistently to your baby’s needs helps build a strong foundation of trust and emotional security.

Every Baby is Different

It’s important to remember that milestones are guides – not checklists. Some babies walk at 10 months, others at 16. Some babble constantly, while others are quiet observers. Trust your instincts, celebrate the small wins, and speak to your GP or kaiako if you ever have concerns.

At WildHeart, we cherish the journey of each pēpi in our care — supporting their development with love, responsiveness, and a deep respect for who they are becoming.
